Yesterday morning I finally finished my first 5k with my mom. It was a cold and rainy morning, but I am happy to say "we did it". ( I just spent about five minutes searching for a clip of Dora singing and dancing that stupid song...no such luck...you're welcome).
Right off the bat, I stayed behind the crowd a tad to have space and fight the temptation to keep up everyone else's pace. I am yet to have a specific playlist on my iPod for running, so i just stick to letting it "shuffle". At about the 1 mile mark I was running along to Snoop Dogg (didn't even know I had any Snoop Dogg on my iPod, but somehow it was really working for me) and as I was starting to feel the second mile was dragging on too long, next plays The Beatles' "The Long and Winding Road". I had to laugh for a second at the irony until I realized I can't laugh because it really screws up my breathing. A little John Mayer, showtunes and Black Eyed Peas' "My Humps" got me through the finish line, thinking about girls in rap videos and how they probably run at least three miles a day. No joke, that was my inspiration to finish. Girls with big booties in rap videos.
My mom finished the race two minutes before me and spent the weekend with us. After hot showers we spent the afternoon snuggled up on the couch in sweats and watched Tangled with the girls...twice. It was a perfect way to spend a rainy Saturday.
To stay motivated I signed up for another 5k next Saturday supporting breast cancer research hosted by my friend Emily and some of her high school students. I am now on the search for an 8k this summer and playing with the idea of a 10 mile race in October that a friend just told me about. I kind of hate running. I am hoping it grows on me if I keep signing up for races and challenging myself to keep from quitting.
Anyone have any great races coming up? Please share!
